Thomas Jefferson’s Presidency

Thomas Jefferson was sworn in as President on March 4, 1801. He was the third President of the United States and the first one who was inaugurated in Washington, DC (Summers 2013). Jefferson was the one who led the American people through the savage partisanship and cultural warfare (Meacham 2012, 43).

He was one of two Presidents who signed the Declaration of Independence (Summers 2013). What is more, he was the first President of the Democratic-Republican Party.

The territory of the United States doubled during his presidency (The Louisiana Purchase). Jefferson also proposed the Louisiana Government Bill to govern the territory.

Jefferson organized an expedition to survey the new lands. Lewis and Clark were sent to collect scientific data. The results of that expedition helped determine the boundaries of the continent. A lot of plants and animals were discovered and named (bison, beaver, trout, etc.)(Meacham 2012, 172).
