Nursing profession is aimed at providing the best assistance to every member of the society. That is why nursing is considered to be a calling since one is required to work with the patients. Nurses always aim at ensuring the best quality of service to all clients. In this regard, they seek to collect all the possible information related to their services to improve their clients’ level of satisfaction. When infants are delivered prematurely, they are placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). While in this facility, it is the duty of the nurses to take care of them until they are old enough to function normally (Polit & Beck, 2010). The current essay aims to discuss nursing research as it is used by the nurses to improve their service.

The study employed is nursing research. It has used a systematic method that utilizes questions in probing the satisfaction of the patient at time intervals to determine the mother’s perception about the hospital and the services rendered. This idea will enable the hospital to receive information about what the patients would like to be done more and also get an insight of what the patients would require that is not being provided (Polit & Beck, 2003). Through this research, the nurse looks forward to having a cordial relationship with the patients and be able to provide services worth to the clients thus bringing a sense of fulfillment to both parties.

The independent variable in the current nursing research where the nurse visits the mother and the baby at home is time. In this case, the visits are carried out after the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit discharge at an interval of one week and four weeks. The time is fixed and what is studied about the period is the condition of the baby and the mother (Polit & Beck, 2003). Therefore, it is possible to state that time is independent since the health status of the patients depends on time. The research seeks to define whether the duration of the baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was adequate for further healthy recovery or there is a need to give more time before the baby is discharged.

The researcher’ role is being an investigator in this particular research. The study is based on an investigation of the facts about the patients’ satisfaction with their services, and thus knowing what should be adjusted to improve clients' satisfaction with the services (Polit & Beck, 2010). The role played by the researcher involves him/her visiting the patient at home and it gives a unique opportunity for the researcher to understand the client both verbally and non-verbally.

The role of the home visit is significant since it allows the researcher to become familiar with the real environment that the patients live in after the hospital discharge. In this case, the researcher can eliminate many doubts and assumptions since he/she becomes the part of the situation. The home environment helps to gauge the coping capacity of the baby, and if the conditions are not favorable, the researcher would be compelled to advise the hospital to increase the duration of the children stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Polit & Beck, 2003). In addition, the nurse can inform the mother on how best to take care of the baby under the prevailing conditions.

Conclusively, nursing research is a practical method of ensuring improved services are provided to clients. It allows direct contact with the patients allowing accurate data collection. The independent variable of time relates to the health of the baby, and it helps the researcher in making sound recommendations. These recommendations are related to both the mother on how to take good care of the baby and also the hospital on how to improve service delivery.
