The movie “A Beautiful Mind” was based loosely on the life of John Forbes Nash, Jr. He was an American mathematician who is a recipient of a Nobel Prize in Economics. He was diagnosed of paranoid schizophrenia.
John Nash’s symptoms could have begun as early as during college because his roommate and close friend Charles Herman turned out to be imaginary. The movie shows Nash and his relationships with his supervisor William Parcher and the little girl Marcee, a niece of Charles. Both are product of his delusions. In the film, Nash was depicted as an obvious genius- stable with frequent episodes of paranoia. His behavior is erratic at times, seeing people and hearing things that are not real.
There is no known direct cause of John Nash’s mental disorder. Although the environmental factors around him could be attributed to the development of his schizophrenia. Growing up, he was exposed to a lot of stress. He gets easily frustrated. And given the nature of his career, he encountered many failed experiments before succeeding.
The film showed that John Nash was continuously given anti-psychotic medications during and after his stay at the hospital. He was also subjected to a series of insulin shock therapy. John Nash was released from the hospital after completing the said therapy.
